Visit From Dingwall Camera Club

Last week Dingwall Camera Club visited us, and three of their members showcased their work in the first half. Phil Downie showed a poignant Audio Visual (AV) show of Croick Church, showing the names engraved in the windows during the clearances of 1845. Next, Bozena Kalejta-Summers showed two AVs about her experiences of bird ringing in the Norwegian Tundra and in the Outer Hebrides. Lastly, John Campbell showed two AVs from his trips to Canada, showing some of the country’s beautiful scenery.

In the second half, Phil Downie returned to show some action-packed sports photographs in his presentation “A View from the Sidelines”. Phil shared many stories (and some secrets) about his images which were taken in the full spectrum of Scottish weather. His fantastic images from a range of sporting events showed that his trigger finger is certainly well exercised!

We can only hope that our return visit to Dingwall Camera Club is as successful as this evening was.

David Beatson - Landscapes and Wildlife

David Beatson, a new member of Inverness Camera Club, stepped in at short notice to present his landscape and wildlife photographs. It is always interesting to see the work of other club members and he certainly didn’t disappoint. His landscape images were stunning and showed the importance of rising early to catch the best light. They covered a range of locations in Scotland, often with his favourite dappled light.

In the second half we were treated to a variety of wildlife images. David moved to the area only 6 months ago but was quick to get to know his neighbours – pine martens and badgers. With hard work and determination, plus some tasty peanuts and mice, he has managed to produce some stunning images. His leaping pine marten photos were a definite highlight for me.

Lesley Simpson ARPS, Dingwall Camera Club

It was an evening of two halves and in the first half Lesley talked of her experiences in photographing the Tour de France. She showed some great action shots of the cyclists and told us of the preparation required to achieve such images.

After the tea break, Lesley returned to her specialist subject – macro photography of insects and spiders, along with her new found interest in bird photography. The quality of the images was outstanding. With pin sharp detail and nice diffuse backgrounds to make the subject stand out, it was clear why her images were so successful in competitions. Also obvious was the enthusiasm and knowledge Lesley has about her subjects, allowing her to achieve these fantastic images.

Unfortunately these images were too detailed and realistic for at least one arachnophobe in the audience who had to close her eyes for several minutes. But I’m even she had a most enjoyable evening.

Member's Night - Wednesday 2nd February 2011

Member’s nights are a great opportunity to find out what your fellow photographers are doing and to showcase the talent within Inverness Camera Club. This week it was the turn of 3 regulars: Glenn Collett, Mark Logan and Billy Gow.

Glenn kicked off the evening with some photographs of the stars of stage and screen. His images were a mixture of scanned slides and digital files, with the former being given a new lease of life with the advent of Photoshop.

Mark combined still photographs with movies and music to create an AV production of his once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hong Kong. Using all these elements together, he created a great record of his trip.

Billy continued the travel theme with an AV of his recent trip to Thailand. A wide range of subjects were covered, including people and some stunning beaches.

Not only did we get to see lots of high quality images, but we also saw how creative our members can be in putting together interesting presentations.

Iceland Travelogue

Roy Robertson, FRPS, Vice President of RPS, took us on a tour of Iceland with his presentation to the club last week. Fortunately we were spared the freezing temperatures and could enjoy the sights from the comfort of the Culduthel Christian Centre. We saw icebergs, geysers, steaming geothermal areas, but sadly no whales (despite his best attempts).

The evening provided an insight into a country which in many ways seemed like another world. I am sure the Icelandic tourist board will benefit from Roy’s interesting travelogue!
